Cody, Wyoming

Image
We left Red Lodge and headed south to Cody, Wyoming and as we crossed the Clark’s Fork River, Lewis & Clark, Sacagawea & Pomp waved goodbye and about the same time “Buffalo Bill Cody”showed up and welcomed us to Wyoming! The city of Cody has grown a lot since we were here last. Lots of new buildings and shops.  First thing this morning I had a free pancake breakfast at the RV Park that we are staying and then we headed to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. What a place! It is everything that Buffalo Bill did in his Wild West Shows plus so much history about the people who came and settled the western frontier. Display after display, artwork, Indians, guns, trappers, buffalo hunters and more! WOW! Next we went to Old Trail Town. This is also quite a place! They have old historical buildings and associated material that have been moved from where they were originally built and reconstructed at Old Trail Town and filled with original furnishings. It was quite a morning...

Beartooth Scenic Byway

Image
We headed up the Beartooth byway on a pretty morning. The car was loaded with Gaye, Dakota and me plus John Denver, Glen Cambell, Neil Diamond and my friend “Charles Kuralt”. Yes, Charles was my friend. Charles used to spend a week up on Grandfather Mountain every summer, a guest of Hugh Morton. That’s how we met and became friends. Charles in all of his travels proclaimed that the Beartooth Highway was the most beautiful drive in America. Any body that has ridden the highway would agree!  The Beartooth is closed in the winter and just opened for the summer season May 24! The highway winds around left and right, sharp turns with occasional scenic turn outs. Beauty is everywhere on the 60+ mile trip to Cooke City. It climbs to 10,954 feet!  Snow was 4’ or more! It was a great trip, not much traffic, and like I said beauty everywhere! We had lunch in Cooke City and headed back to Red Lodge on what I call the Heart Mountain highway. It is also a beautiful drive following th...

Absarokee, Dean, Nye, Fishtail and Roscoe!

Image
We headed into the back country on a beautiful day, light winds, sunny sky with big fluffy clouds, perfect! We were looking at the snow covered Absaroka-Beartooth mountains, absolutely gorgeous. Hardly any traffic, a few local ranchers but the scenery was gorgeous. The houses along the Stillwater River were very nice and the views they enjoyed were spectacular. We arrived in uptown/downtown Nye to visit the Nye Trading Post . Then we drove to the roads end where the huge Stillwater Mine was located. We found out that the mine produces Platinum and Palladium. We then headed back to Nye, Dean and Fishtail and finally arrived at the “World Renown - Grizzly Bar” in DOWNTOWN ROSCOE!  We had a great lunch and then headed back to the RVPARK! Next the “The Most Beautiful Road in America”

Three Forks, MT.

We left Eureka and headed south and a little east to the town of Three Forks. Beautiful drive light traffic. Okay, test time! It’s named Three Forks for what/why and who came up with the names of the 3 and who are they named for?(answers later) The pictures above are of the beautiful, old, gorgeous, luxurious Sacagawea Hotel.  Who was Sacagawea you ask! She was the Indian woman with baby Pomp who with her husband/interpreter/trapper Charbonneau who traveled with Lewis and Clark in their adventure west. They traveled the Missouri River from St. Louis thru what is now Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Missouri. They reached the end of the Missouri River and found that it was confluence of three rivers.  Answers! Lewis and Clark named these 3 rivers the: Jefferson after the President Thomas Jefferson Gallatin after Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin Madison after Secretary of State James Madison We visited The Three Forks of the Missouri NHL and Thre...

Northwest Montana Beauty

Image
?  The weather has not been very good for picture taking or seeing the area but we took a a drive to Yaak on Sunday. YAAK? It is Montana’s most northwestern city! We drove 65 miles on 2 lane paved fire service roads. We saw evidence of recent fires and tree replanting. Up and over around and down top speed 45 mph and “yahoo” downtown and uptown Yaak which consists of The Dirty Shame Saloon and Yaak Mercantile & Tavern. We had a good lunch and a little talk with the bartender/waitress who had moved here from Michigan and the cashier who had moved here from Washington. We then headed back to Eureka following the same route. I forgot to say that our route crossed Lake Koocanusa over a beautiful bridge.  We woke up Monday morning and “viola” partly cloudy skies and forecasted warmer temperature! I grabbed my camera and looked for ideal vantage points to take some pictures. The RV park that we are staying is just over a year old and very nice and ver pretty views. The park incl...
