Big Sky

 



Wednesday we traveled from the South Dakota Badlands to Big Sky Montana, Broadus to be exact.

 Thursday morning we headed to Devils Tower National Monument.

Hardly any traffic but lots of people visiting Devils Tower. 100 miles on Highway 212 & 112, 70 mph, and very few cars or trucks. 

The big rock was quite impressive. Lots of people, some actually climbing the rock, which takes 5-8 hours. Nope, not me.

We left there and headed back up Hwy 112 en route to Capital Rock National Landmark. Again no traffic to speak of. We reached Alzada, MT. And got fuel. 

We left the paved road and headed north on back country gravel roads which were in very good shape.

This is ranching country, and I mean BIG ranches, cattle & some sheep. As we got closer to Capital Rock the road got narrower and narrower until we were on a worn out, loose rock, pothole filled pig path! We hadn’t seen a car, person, truck in 25 miles! We reached the rock and took some pictures and let Dakota wander around. Again there is NOBODY around.

I tried to take a different route out of there but it was just to rough too travel. So, I found a spot to turn around (barely) and back we went, 35 miles on gravel road!(and we did not see a soul)

This morning we made another back country run to Ft. Howes, Otter and Birney. Again back country gravel roads and nobody. This was again ranching country with no fences and loose cattle.


Tomorrow we head to Zortman MT. population 69!

Beartooth Scenic Byway

 We headed up the Beartooth byway on a pretty morning. The car was loaded with Gaye, Dakota and me plus John Denver, Glen Cambell, Neil Diamond and my friend “Charles Kuralt”. Yes, Charles was my friend. Charles used to spend a week up on Grandfather Mountain every summer, a guest of Hugh Morton. That’s how we met and became friends. Charles in all of his travels proclaimed that the Beartooth Highway was the most beautiful drive in America. Any body that has ridden the highway would agree!  The Beartooth is closed in the winter and just opened for the summer season May 24! The highway winds around left and right, sharp turns with occasional scenic turn outs. Beauty is everywhere on the 60+ mile trip to Cooke City. It climbs to 10,954 feet!  Snow was 4’ or more! Badlands National Park

  Beautiful cool morning as we headed into the Badlands. Perfect time to visit, not many people this time of year. The road went up and down, left and right with lots of turnouts and overlooks with great view's. We exited the Park to go and see Wall and the famous Wall Drug. We have been seeing Wall Drug signs for 200 + miles. Quite a place. We had lunch and headed back into the Park. This entrance had some Buffalo and people were trying to get pictures of these huge animals. We headed west on a rough gravel road looking right and left for Prairie Dogs. We arrived at Robert’s Prairie Dog Town. They were all over the place but rather camera shy. Saw some more Buffalo. Cars were few and we exited the Park and headed to the town named Scenic. Scenic is basically a ghost town and we found nothing open. The place was right out of an old west movie. We left Scenic and headed back to the bus, 40 miles and very few Ranches or anything else.
